Does it really make a difference to match at prom?

Okay, so my senior prom is coming up. My date showed me her dress and it turns out to be a dark teal. Now, its not like I didn't hate the dress--but I can't imagine myself wearing a dark teal vest and tie. I really don't like blue, and I don't want to spend over a hundred bucks renting a tux on a color I really dislike. I told her that I will wear complimentary colors, like silver, that can match without looking tacky. She is so upset that its unbelievably dramatic. She wants us to match --- a color that is very unflattering to both wear. I mean, I want to look nice too...she just thinks its all about matching colors but I can't get her to belive that complimentary colors do work too! Ex. blue and silver. Prom does not focus on the damn colors, what do you guys think?
