Is this a good beach to learn to surf on?

So for vacation I am going to New Jesrey, Six Flags and then the beach. I want to try surfing for the first time. Would new jersey be a good place to go surf for a beginner? I will use a funboard. Also are a funboard and softboard the same thing? What's the BEST type of board for me to learn on? It's a one time thing so I'll only be renting!
